King Agamemnon showed his stubbornness of heart when the Chryses went to him and brought rich treasure to ransom his daughter. He held in his hand a golden staff, twined about with the sacred wreaths of Apollo Shootafar, and made his petition to the Achaean people in general but chiefly to the two royal princes of Atreus' line: "My lords, and you their subjects, for you I pray that the gods who dwell in Olympus may grant you to sack Priam's city, and to have a happy return home! but my dear daughter--set her free, I beseech you, and accept this ransom, and respect Apollo Shootafar the son of Zeus!" But King Agamemnon was not pleased. Then he told the priest to be off, and in harsh words too: "Don't let me find you here any more, you; don't stay now and don't come again, or else your staff and sacred wreaths may not protect you. The women I will not release because I love Briseis more than my own wife. So the Chryses prayed earnestly to Apollo and asked help. Phiobos Apollo heard his prayer and told it to Zeus, then Zeus summoned Achilles to the conference then the conference started until such insulting words came out from the mouth of King Agamemnon and made Achilles angry. Then Achilles scowled at him, and said: "Ha! Greedy heart, shamelessness in royal dress! How could any man be willing to obey you, whether on some errand or in the battle field? Then King Agamemnon warned Achilles that he will come to Achilles quarters to show how much stronger he is than Achilles.
